My parents' humble beginnings encouraged them to teach us about finances. We earned our allowance by doing our chores--in other words--we worked for our money. What a novel idea! At 16 I got my first job at Burger King, complete with polyester pants that were flared at the bottom and way too short. Before I knew it I was buying my own convertible VW bug and feeling the very satisfaction and self-confidence that working brings with it. When it was time for college I had to prove myself to my parents by sharing in tuition costs as well as earning a high GPA. After one year of doing so, I was rewarded with their footing the bill until graduation. I still continued to work, however, to pay for incidentals and Nickel Beer night at the local tavern. I had no investments. I didn't even know anything about them. Zilch. All I had was some stock in my fathers company that he had bought for me about 10 years earlier. I was hoping to hold onto that forever. (Because that's what women do, right?)
Eventually, I fell for this crazy hockey player nicknamed "Killer" and before you could say "Game Misconduct" I was having a baby, getting married and building our dream home on a lake in Maine. Soooooooo exciting! But, as my world turns, one day it's up, the next... Kevin got sent to the minors making less than half his salary. One day it's cha-ching, the next it's cha-change. Thankfully we had put some money away while he was making good money. A few life-threatening injuries later, Kevin was forced to retire and is now coaching a minor pro team in Youngstown, Ohio called The Steelhounds. I figure with the amount of time he spends at the rink now, about 24 hours/day, 7 days a week, he's bringin' home about $5.00/hour. Ha! So with three beautiful little girls running around now, I am more thankful than ever that I stuck with the Chicks. The life-long lessons they have taught me will only further benefit my family's financial future.
Listen, I am still not an expert... I can hold my own... but I'm still learning. And, with the ever-changing mood of the market you have to stay on top of your strategies, or get left in the dust. The whole club thing is what I LOVE! These women are amazing, and when I am learning with them, it's more like entertainment! (It's amazing what you can learn over a few bottles of wine… but I digress...)
Being in a women's investment group is great. Who else but a woman could understand my precariousness and remind me of who I am... remind me that even though economics were not my forte, I have a plethora of admirable qualities that made me a desirable candidate for this group!! I am a college educated woman who had success in a career before I chose motherhood as my career... I have raised thousands upon thousands of dollars for meaningful charities, dedicated blood, sweat & tears for a political candidate that I staunchly believed in (and still do)... and I believe in God and am fiercely passionate about my family. I treasure with every fiber of my being my beautiful home on a lake in Maine, the laughter of my children, the light coming through the window of my mom & dad's house next door, and my husband who is also my business partner, my best friend, my hero and the strongest person I know. That's ME!!
I also bring something to this dynamic group of women. Each of us has a unique quality or qualities, and that in itself provides for entertaining meetings regardless of our surroundings. Whether it be Vegas, or Minnesota, or wherever, it will always be adventurous and stimulating. I will learn from them and they, too, will learn from me. The possibilities of what we can achieve together are numerous, but especially because we are WOMEN, they are infinite!!
Mrs. Killer,
