I grew up in a very small prairie town in Saskatchewan, Canada, where life was very slow and uncomplicated. I used to think we were one of the richest families in town, never realizing that hand me downs or home made clothes were not part of the lifestyle of the rich and famous. With 5 kids to support on one very modest income, my parents were financial experts without probably really knowing it.
My money lessons started early in life, even though I didn’t realize it at the time. With every, “turn off the tv”, ”shut the lights off in the room if your not in it”, and “close the door, you are letting the heat out”, these were lessons about finances that were invaluable to me and were the starting blocks for my own values of money, that I took with me as I left home and ventured into the world on my own. (As for investing, it was never really talked about in our house, but quietly, my parents were stashing away, every bit that they could and now are enjoying a very nice retirement.)
I made it through college, by working part time and in the summers, finally sucking it up and taking out student loans in my final year. It was no wonder that I majored in finance and economics – a true area of interest.
I ended up marrying a man from Saskatchewan as well, who was playing hockey in the states. I pursued my interest in financial planning by getting my series 7, broker’s license in 1998. But with our marriage came babies, and 5 years and 3 baby boys later, I put my financial planning interests, both personally and professionally, to the side.
After life calmed down a bit, I really wanted to get my head back into investing in some aspect. It was perfect timing when Megan moved to St. Louis and we had her and Susie (a long time friend of my husband’s and more recently mine) over for dinner. They mentioned that they were looking for a couple more members for the ‘Chicks’ and I jumped on board immediately.
In three years, I have met 7 great new friends, and have had a bunch of fun. The Chicks have allowed me to get my head back into thinking about investing.
I am very excited about the direction our ‘revitalized’ group! Here’s to many more years of Happy, Prosperous Investing!
