Question of the Week

QOW Archives »

Without looking in a dictionary, what do you think the word imbiber means?

Chick Karin  Well, if someone in the Chick Click Investment Club hadn't said the word in their chat room the other night, I'd never have heard it in my whole life. My first guess at the meaning was equivalent to "boobhead" or "imbecile." But now, after witnessing much slurring of the keyboard, I realize that many of those "Chick Clickers" are not only "Clickers" but some dang happy Imbibers. I'm a bit surprised, or maybe I'm hurt, that no one has yet bestowed upon me such a title. I guess I'll have to work on that... I'll start tonight.

Chick Jana  I have no idea, but if I were to guess, I'm trying to think what "to imbibe" means... I'd say some kind of cover up -- kind of shielding the facts. So a person that's trying to cover up the facts is an imbiber. I'm cracking myself up with my answer.

Chick Julie  Someone who will take a drink or two.

Chick Jeanette  I think an imbiber is someone who drinks frequently, or does something else more frequently than he perhaps should. Maybe it is drinking too much tea, or climbing too many mountains, or drives too fast. Whatever!

Chick Lynn  Don't have a clue other then "im" usually refers "to do"... ok, I'll guess, to fall over, lose your balance. Am I right, am I right???

Chick Cheryl  "Imbiber" means: one who participates in the action of. Sample sentence: Bill Clinton swears he was never an imbiber (or an inhaler)!

Chick Kristin  No idea. "Im" means "not," and "biber" may refer to drinking a beverage, or something like that. So, without using any resource whatsoever, I'll take a wild guess and say, "to not drink."

Chick Lorene  Hmmmm... one who... (not sure!), drinks?
