The
Broke Diaries by Angela Nissel
Why I purchased this book is beyond me, but it appeared on my
Amazon recommendation list. Geez, they were right. This is the
story of a college student, broke of course, and the hilarious
journal she first wrote and posted on the Internet. This isn't
the first diary to be published electronically first and later
in book form, but it works. Nissel, is a struggling college
student at the University of Pennsylvania, in order to keep her
mind off her empty stomach, she would keep a journal of her days
and post it on the Net. Some of my favorite postings were
entries about the check-cashing office (after she closes her
bank account), the horror of being two cents short for the
grocery bill and the joys of making friends who will buy
dinner.
Nissel's diary will be relished by anyone who's ever been a
student and remembers those ramen noodles. Chick Susie

| Competitive
Fire by Michael Clarkson
This author uses hundreds of
interviews, extensive research, and his own up-close observation
of elite athletes, an award-winning sports journalist
demonstrates that the root of greatness is the reaction of
athletes to "fight or flight" situations in
competition. There are some amazing true-life stories of what
made certain athletes great. Definitely a quick read and the
author provides many quotes and examples from professional
athletes which make this an enjoyable sports psychology book,
one of few. Chick Susie

The
Face of the River by James Busbee
This
is the first book written by this author, James Busbee. His wife
works with a friend of mine and she handed me the book and said,
"Read this and review it" (I felt a little like
Oprah). The story takes place in Atlanta, GA so it was fun to
read, since I've been here for 8+ years. The pictures he painted
with words were great. It's a bit of a murder mystery along with
a message about how everyone comes to have his or her own belief
system. I found myself reflecting on my own relationships with
friends, family and society -- how each has molded me to who I
am today. A very quick, entertaining, thought provoking read. Chick Jana

| The
Power of Now: A Guide to Spiritual Enlightenment by
Eckhart Tolle
This book is a little out there,
but what can you expect from a psychic? Yep, a psychic
recommended that I read this book and, of course, I did. I was
amazed that it was very helpful. The main message is that we
should concentrate on being in every moment fully --
experiencing it, without having all the other chatter going on
in your head. After reading this, I found I concentrated on the
task at hand better and worried about things less. It was a very
difficult concept to grasp, to really be in the moment... I'm
writing this book review, I'm writing this book review... okay,
you get the picture. If you want something to help you stop your
mind from chatting away inside your head, calm you down a bit
and concentrate on what you're actually doing, this is the book
for you. Chick Jana |
