Question of the WeekQOW Archives »If you could teach your kids 1 thing your parents didn't teach you, what would it be?That's a very difficult question to answer. I guess I'm attempting to teach Freddie (my one and only child) the concept of giving and sharing. Not that mom and dad didn't teach me but we had to share with our siblings and an only child doesn't share with anyone growing up. Chick Julie This is absolutely NOT to offend my parents because I think they were a product of their times... but I would like to keep the diet obsession out of my kids' lives. I always remember my mom on a diet and worried about her weight and that carried over to me. I started dieting very young, and still obsess about my weight. But now that I'm older, well, since college, I've become an avid exerciser... I can't live without it... and my kids like to "work out" with me. I try to teach them "healthy" instead of "thin." Now don't get me wrong, my mother complimented me endlessly, but I took on her characteristics of wanting to be thin. I'm happy to say both my mother and I live our lives much healthier today than ever! Chick Megan Birth Control. Chick Karin How to play a good game of bridge! Chick Jeanette I would probably (if I could do it all over again) insist that my two older children learn in depth multiple languages and cultures. While my parents were strong proponents of language development, we (me and my siblings) are fluent only in English and French. Chick Susie The one thing that I did teach my children that I know was not open to us as children is that your opinion matters at all times, and that dinner time is the time for everyone to share their day whether good or bad! I tried to ask my children everyday, "what was a good thing that happened to you today and what was a bad thing that happened to you." Uufdah, the conversations that came from that. :-) It always kept the communication flowing. Chick Lynn That it's never too late to call off a wedding ceremony... that the temporary awkwardness, embarrassment, reluctance will pass. If the marriage is wrong, it's okay to stop the proceedings right up to the very last minute. Patricia Knowing intrinsically what is Right and what is Wrong in major life issues that my child could encounter throughout life, but especially in the teenage/young-adult years where flaws in decision making may turn into irreversible and regrettable mistakes. nedttread I would teach my child to have respect for himself and for others. By being respectful of themselves, children would make better choices in life. WolftrapI Make sure you study hard in school and do all of your homework! Life is just too hard without a good education. chica intelegente When you earn something (be it money, respect, trust) you value it more. Kasey |
