Question of the Week

QOW Archives »

Do you support a U.S. war with Iraq?

No, I do not support the war against Iraq. I feel that our President is trying to garner support for the war because we did not capture Osama Bin Laden. Moreover, the majority of the international community does not support the war, in part, due to lack of evidence regarding chemical warfare. Chick Kristin

I think its very difficult for the American people to know what's right and wrong on this point. We are not given all the facts and I'm not sure we should have all the facts. Its hard to defend our country with the press, congress and every other person trying to question everything that's being said or done. I don't think we can wage war without our allies behind us, but we do need to get rid of Saddam somehow!!! Chick Julie

I guess I would support a war with Iraq when that is the only possibility left, but I am not quite to that point yet. Chick Jeanette

This is a tough one and I typically do not like to air my political views, I believe that the privacy of the voting booth was designed with me in mind, but here is one viewpoint that keeps resounding through my head, perhaps it is because I worry incessantly about the type of world we will leave for our children.

The President's reasons for war with Iraq make political and economic sense, while Hussein is most likely as evil as they say, but there has to be more to the debate then meets the eye. Iraq has, or will have, weapons of mass destruction and a history of violence and state sponsored terrorism. If so, then why not hit Israel while we're there? They have weapons of mass destruction and have a much more recent history of violence and state (and US) sponsored terrorism. How about Pakistan and India? Now there are two countries that have nukes and are more than ready to use them. Next we could take out Georgia and Turkey.

The fact is that the US could fit into the category of a country with weapons of mass destruction and a strong will to use them. To think that we are too noble or righteous to do so is false. A brief look our record the last fifty years will prove that. Pay special attention to Nicaragua and the Philippines. Invading Iraq will do not much more than give radical terrorist another example of our strong arm tactics and another excuse to kill Americans on our own soil as well as abroad. Contrary to popular belief, it is not our freedom that most foreigners hate, it is our bullying and blatant disregard for the citizenry of countries that don't fit our agenda. The cycle of violence must stop and if America really is all that noble and righteous maybe we should be leading the world in taking responsibility for past atrocities with a pledge to avoid further violence.

I yes I did protest the war in Vietnam. Chick Susie

I'm embarrassed to say I don't know enough of what's going on or all the reasons to be for or against. a war in Iraq. I still believe in trying to work things out peacefully but I'm sure there are quite a few reasons why we should be going to war besides the horrific act of 9/11. I think we, the people, aren't given all the facts until after the fact. So you go through supporting something or being against something and then once it's over you find out the real truth about it. So I'm waiting for all the facts. Please someone, enlighten me. Chick Jana

Yes, yes, and YES! A couple of days ago I was working at the autumnfest for our church, St. Hedwig. This woman comes in and tells me and another woman there that we need to pray the rosary for world peace. Then she said, "We are not in imminent danger... think about those poor Iraqi children." Huh? Yeah, I feel for the children... but I feel for my own children as well. To say that Saddam Hussein isn't planning to harm us is simply... well... ridiculous! This, the man who used biochemical weapons on HIS OWN PEOPLE? Are we so ignorant as to believe that you can rationalize with this demon? WAKE UP!!! I am frankly sick of this argument. This man will not go away (look at his election, no one to run against him for fear they'll be beheaded) unless we make him go away. I am scared of war, but I am more scared of letting this freak-show go about his business. Unfettered weapons inspections? Be real. Not a chance. Chick Megan

Yes, I support anything that would support the security of the United States of America. Its a shame that it has come to this, but they won't back off and this country has grown tired of it! Ware2

I think that it is a necessary evil and the thought of war is never pleasant. I sent my husband (then boyfriend) off to Vietnam, so I know what it feels like, but we can't go on feelings. Iraq is out to destroy democracy and we are that picture to them. Would the U.S. ever have just one name on the ballot? Sure he got 99.96% of the last vote and maybe 100% of this vote but where is the true gauge of what the people want? I am willing to sacrifice to make this a better world for future generations. I am 100% with our President. Amaw Wendy

My husband was a Marine in the Gulf War. He was in the last group of Reserves that came back. He has said for years, "We didn't get to finish the job and we will be back within 10 years." Quit listening to people like Barbara Striesand and talk to someone who was there. The job is not finished. And for the thousands of innocent Americans that perished on September 11th, we need to finish the job. Jenni Girl

Do I want a war with Iraq? No. Do I support our President? Yes. I think war is inevitable with Iraq and necessary to win against terrorism. I think our country has been forced into this position and is suggesting war as an absolute last means towards wiping out radical posses and achieving peace (for however long that will last). Beth

No. There are alternatives to war. Saddam is a tyrant, no doubt. However, the USA is not. We have overreacted to 911 and are allowing the ego and rhetoric of the politicians to lead us to something that we have always tried to avoid. We have a homeland security guru -- something like our drug guru -- and see what we have done with that position? More money down the drain. If we want to be part of a global world we must listen to the concerns of the whole world and not act like a bull in a china shop. rubber chickie

Yes! I believe that Sadaam Hussein is not only a threat to the US, but to the entire world. I believe that he has been on a "power trip" because it was allowed for so long. I don't like the idea of anyone losing their lives in war, but I like it even less when there is such a threat of evil. Saphyre
