Question of the Week

QOW Archives »

What's the best book you've read in the past 6 months?

This is a really tough question, as so many of the books I have read were awesome, would it be too commercial to put in a plug for 101 Reasons to Own the World's Greatest Investment: Berkshire Hathaway by Robert Miles, since BRK it is one of four candidates for reinvestment next month by the Chicks?

OK, serious for a moment, I would choose Miracles Happen by Brooke and Jean Ellison because it is filled with emotion and offers inspiration (which a lot of us Moms need, especially right now) for what can be in the face of huge challenges, set backs and special needs. Chick Susie

I really liked Its Not About the Bike by Lance Armstrong. I felt it gave such a great inside on his overcoming cancer, the tour de france etc. Chick Julie

This question is so embarassing as I have not completed a single book in the last 6 months! I will name, however, the two books I've been dabbling in over the past year... both fascinating. One might be considered trash and the other, a true treasure. After my father died a year ago, a friend gave me John Edwards' Crossing Over. He thought I might find it helpful to cope with my father's death. I am a bit of a skeptic when it comes to psychics mainly because I think the world is full of phonies, however I do have a very open mind when it comes to the paranormal.

The other book is one I have been studying with a group called Bonehead Bible Study.... Wow, it is so fascinating to read and learn this way. Its truly amazing, how many simple sayings we all say today that had their origins in the Bible! Chick Cheryl

Without Reservations. It is a wonderful book easy to read about a woman with grown children. She has always been identifed through her workplace and travels to find her interests and meet new people on her own merits not as the journalist. It is a great book with little tidbits ofher philosophyat the end of each chapter. anonymous

Anything to do with Harry Potter. I am a huge HP fan and have been since before he was hot with the juvies. All of my books are first editions, this is especially important for #'s 1 and 2 since they were published pre-Potter Blitz. My favorite book of the four is #3 because it ties so many pieces of the puzzle together and makes for a richer experience in re-reading #1. I also like to read adult books like the Ya-Ya Sisterhood, but I don't always get them as well as the kiddie lit stuff. Debbie

The best book I've read recently is John Adams, because it made me realize how remarkably human he and his wife Abigail were. They were ordinary people who did extraordinary things, and they were steadfast in their commitment and dedication to our country. The book makes history come alive by showing John and Abigail Adams as real people, complete with admirable qualities and character flaws. It's a must-read for anyone interested in knowing more about the beginnings of our great country! Patricia

10 things I learned from Bill Porter by Shelly Brady. This is an amazing story of a man who had CP. He was written off by much of society and told by the Oregon State Unemployment Office that there was nothing he would be able to do. Further he was told to go home and collect a check for the rest of his life.

Despite his limitations he pressed forward, refusing to let his condition stop him. The Fuller Brush company told him that he would never make it. The Watkins company told him the same thing. He made a deal with Watkins by talking them into giving him their toughest sales area. With nothing to lose they (Watkins) agreed. Bill Porter took the toughest sales area and turned it into one of the highest grossing areas in the country.

This story is so amazing that Barbara Walters and 60 Minutes did a segment on his life. Further TNT did a made for TV movie about Bill Porter starring William Macy [which they often rerun] just before the holidays. Gary
