A
Chick at the Olympics
In case you haven't
heard, Chick Karin's husband, Phil Housley, is a
member of the United States Olympic Hockey team. Karin and her family
headed to Salt Lake for the games and is filing a sporadic report from the
city. See Report Index.
Hello from Salt Lake City!! I've been here since Friday and it's
been a whirlwind of activity. With three hockey games, two concerts,
medals ceremonies, exchanging pins and downing some green Jell-O, it's no
wonder I collapsed this morning. I'm sick. My son Wilson and I are stuck
in our hotel room with a cold and a fever of 100 degrees. I left the room
once to go to the pharmacy to pick up some Robitussin DM and headed right
back to bed. But enough about my run down nose; let me tell you what's
going on here in Salt Lake...
Go USA! The U.S. hockey team won all three of their first round
games! This put them in the first seed spot enabling them to play last
place Germany on Wednesday. Cross your fingers and hope for a win. If we
lose, we're done. If we win, we advance to the medal round! In Game One we
played Finland and won 6-0. Game Two was against Russia, and we ended up
tying, 2-2. Game Three was against Belarus and we beat them 8-1. My
parents and Phil's dad came in for the Olympic tournament and we tried to
cram as much stuff in this weekend as we could as my parents had to leave
today.
We shopped downtown, but got nowhere near the Roots store as the
line outside was four hours long. Crazy people all wanting the navy blue
USA beret. Thank goodness Phil got one in his Olympic athlete bag so I
don't have to stand in that line. I'm thinking that I have to propose
Roots to the Chicks as a company to invest in. This Olympics has brought
them more fame than they ever expected, and as a fan of Roots for years
living in Canada, it's a great product. Hmmmm... I wonder what their
Chicks Dozen would look like?
We also took in a couple of concerts... Train and Nelly Furtado. It
was Nelly that put me over the edge last night. I started out watching the
medals ceremony at the outdoor Olympic Medals Plaza, and then her band
started playing. Three hours and a couple of frozen feet later, I could
feel the feverish chill. But, we HAD to stay for the fireworks. Little
Avery would have it no other way. Nelly was great, and Train was so-so.
(It was too cold to really listen.)
Security is at it's peak here. Sometimes I feel like I'm in Russia.
At each hockey game you have to go through a metal detector and then they
go through your purse. It's worse than airport security. You feel a bit
safer, but it sure takes a long time. We have to arrive at the arena two
hours before game time. It makes for a long day (and evening, when some
games don't start until 12:30 AM Eastern.)
I'm going to take one more little nap before I head to Creed tonight and a
private shopping trip at Roots. (They got wind that the USA Wives wanted
to clean them out, so they are giving us thirty minutes all to ourselves
in the store.)
Watch the game Wednesday at 6 PM EST. Phil's wearing number 6!
Til then... cough cough.
