Weekly Wrap

October 13, 2000 | Weekly Wrap Archive »

I can't even believe I am going to tell you this, but. guess what happened to me this week? I did something sooooooo Un-Chicky. I freaked out about the stock market. Yep, me -- Head Hen -- all wrapped up in the market with a bow on top. I started to watch CNBC religiously and if I had to go anywhere in the car, I turned on Business Radio. Inside I was screaming, "The sky is falling, the sky is falling!"

What's that all about?! That's not living; that's sick. If you're a Chick, a weekly summary is more than enough, and up to the minute coverage can be left out there in airwave land. We have more important stuff to do. Like workout. I hired a personal trainer yesterday (due to my falling butt) and decided to bag the market to work off some fat. Guess what... all that worryin' and freakin' for nothing. The market bounced right back on Friday. Here's the summary.

I don't know if you know this, but there is this Chick, this Goldman Sachs strategist Chick named Abby Cohen. When Abby speaks, people listen. Anyway, she spoke on Friday and said she was "Bullish" (Manic) on the outlook for the market. People listened. After a six-week stock sell-off, investors started looking for bargains. The buying frenzy began!! The Nasdaq posted its second-biggest gain on record.one day after closing at its lowest level of the year. (I told you the sky was falling.)

Couple of news items related to the Chicks.

Chick-held General Electric came out with their earnings this week, and as usual, they were stellar! Sales were up 18% over last year. Again, and as Chicks we can't say this enough, they bring good things to life.

Also on Friday, and listen up Chick Lorene 'cuz you own one of these babies, Gateway came out with their earnings. Everyone was holding their breath. but YEEE HAAAA. they were awesome. You see, (and this is only my take on the whole thing) because of all of the recent earnings warnings from the technology industry, everyone was getting a little panicky. (Not me.) They either steered clear of the market or pulled their money out. Gateway's strong growth this past quarter told everyone that things are fine in Gateway-land and to stop the insanity. If you ask me, their earnings announcement combined with Chick Abby, started the "Buying" ball rolling.

The funny part about this week's market wrap is that I was prepared to tell you about all of the companies that had a horrible week. like Home Depot and Oracle. Those stories went out the window as they actually came out okay by Friday's end.

One last thing, as I had to remind myself of it yesterday: if you are a Chick, you buy companies you believe in. Even if the market does take a major dive, you rest easy because you hold good strong companies that will survive a slump. We have to say that five times a day during weeks like this last one. Speaking of slump. my rear-end should be perkin' up in another couple weeks. No falling sky for this Henny Penny.

Chick Karin
